WATCH OUR WEBINAR - Being African in Australia

This virtual meetup was an ‘in conversation’ between some amazing people of African descent, who will share their experiences of learning to live in Australia. It took place on Monday, 5 September 2022, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm AEST

This meetup between members of the HandUp Congo community celebrates the International Day for People of African descent and will explore the enormous contributions and challenges of people of African descent to every field of human endeavour.

Blaise Mushapa


Blaise is a member of an ethnic group on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region plagued by devastating conflict. After spending 6 years in a refugee camp, Blaise and his family migrated to Australia in 2017. With the help of GLAPD’s resettlement services, he and his family now live in Cowra, NSW where he works in disability care. Blaise has been recognised by Rotary for being an active contributor to community life.

Chisenga Makomo

Originally from Zambia, Chisenga lives in Sydney working as an artist and educator. She believes in using the unique arts and culture of Africa to engage and educate people about improving their wellbeing, the importance of self-worth and having a sense of purpose and belonging.

Samuel Takporo


Originally from Sudan, but now calls Australia home after migrating in 2003. Samuel has made many contributions to his Muro community facilitating family conflict resolutions, social development projects and providing leadership to young people in prison. His dynamic presentations about the challenges and achievements of Africans to Australia make him a popular presenter to Rotary and other community groups.
