HandUp Congo team arrives in Kinshasa

Our HandUp Congo team arrived Feb 28 and have found some good changes, including Chinese-built road improvements. The ride from Kinshasa’s chaotic airport was much quicker and smoother than in past decades. We passed an 8 foot tall robot traffic cop, one of two here, directing traffic. Looked like it was made of Lego! But they are really made of aluminium and stainless steel to endure the city’s year-round hot climate.

The robots are equipped with cameras that record the flow of vehicles. They are powered by solar panels and are equipped with surveillance cameras. The aim is to cut accidents and help reduce traffic in Kinshasa’s busy streets. The city has a population of 10 million.
