River scenes in the Congo

Congo’s rivers are the country’s super highways.  Canoe passage is the most practical way to reach remote villages for most Congolese.  HandUp Congo co-founder Lucy Hobgood-Brown traveled by motorized canoe along three mighty rivers to reach the village where her father was born in 1928, and where HandUp Congo collaborates with villagers on a range of community development projects. “I was lucky to have the funds to pay for a motorized canoe,” she says.  “This enabled me to reach Lotumbe in 14 hours, instead of the usual 7 days if I’d had to paddle.”  Along the way, she was mesmerized by river traffic and village life. “No matter how many times I do this, it never gets old!”
