In 1912 Clay Hobgood, grandfather of HandUp Congo co-founders Anne Zolnor and Lucy Hobgood-Brown, arrived in Lotumbe. Their father Ben was born in this remote village, located 200 km from the Equatorial Province capital of Mbandaka. It is accessible only by canoe. Lucy travelled by motorized canoe (14 hours!) to visit Lotumbe in September 2012, celebrating a centenary of Hobgood connections. Lucy lived in the village as a child. “I loved walking through the village with Congolese friends, seeing how community development projects we have been collaborating on are coming along,” she says.
