The founders of HandUp Congo, Inc., understand that the poor in developing countries often simply lack tools to better their lives and their communities.

Current focus: Lotumbe village, a remote regional medical hub in Equatorial Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Université Protestante au Congo (UPC) in Kinshasa

OLEKO! We are excited to welcome you with a Congolese greeting used in Lotumbe, a remote village in Democratic Republic of Congo where HandUp Congo is working. Consider this site a bit of a CHING -- another Lotumbe dialect word, for chat – where we tell you about resourceful people living there.

Inspired by what two women friends in Lotumbe have accomplished with our gift of two manual sewing machines, we incorporated HandUp Congo as a nonprofit to identify and provide other tools that can help the people of Lotumbe revitalize their community and, perhaps, set a standard for the rest of their troubled country. The women of Lotumbe have formalized their development efforts as an official Congolese NGO, Fondation Lucie Otaenga (FLO).

HandUp Congo also identifies resources for the highly respected Université Protestante au Congo (UPC), which offers degrees in Business, Law, Medicine, and Theology — keys to building the nation of DRC through education. Lotumbe students receive scholarships to attend UPC.

We seek partners to join us in building bridges between Lotumbe, UPC, and the rest of the world. We derive 501(c)(3) status from our fiscal agent, A World Institute for a Sustainable Humanity,
Federal Tax ID: #91-1712077.

Proverbs are a vital tradition in Lotumbe. Here is one that guides us...

Ntafendaka ntando la mpos'e'ola!
One does not cross a river by merely longing for home.
(Desire without action brings no results).

We hope life in Congo will improve -- and we are acting to bring about results. Please join us!
News Briefs
2008
Scholarships for First Year Medical Students
More than 150 UPC medical students have received tuition support, thanks to the Singapore Foundation and CNEC Partners International. Matching grants will be made over the next two years. HandUp Congo facilitated this initiative.

Goodies from Cargo Pilot
International cargo pilot, Bassel Fares, has donated 32 kilos of medical supplies, French books, educational resources, clothing, shoes and toys for Lotumbe's residents. Bassel, who grew up in the Congo, arranged for these items to be hand-carried from the USA to Kinshasa by fellow American School of Kinshasa alumnus Cindy Dunn. Merci!

2007
Microfinance Internship for FLO President

Thanks to connections made by HandUp Congo, FLO president Chantal Bolingo interned with Hope International to prepare Lotumbe to be a pilot savings-based microfinance project. Director Lucy Hobgood-Brown connected HandUp Congo with
CNEC Partners International in Australia, which funded Chantal's travel and living expenses.

Lotumbe Loan Fund Grows
Donor gifts funded FLO's own
small loan fund in fall 2006, starting with 23 borrowers. More than 40 are now being served as repaid loans with interest growing the fund.

Director Trips to Congo Make Connections
Director Lucy Hobgood-Brown participated in two action-packed, self-funded trips to Congo. In April, she evaluated a variety of Australian-sponsored projects in Goma, eastern Congo, on behalf of CNEC Partners International. In October, she met with UPC and FLO representatives in Kinshasa to monitor current projects.

Widows Fund
HandUp Congo, in partnership with
CNEC Partners International and Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Church of Christ, has launched an income-generating project to support vulnerable widows. You can help.

Eyecare Initiative
Remember our eyeglass collection? This project spurred a partnership with a range of eye care organizations, as well as Congo's Ministry of Health. In July 2007 experts met in Kinshasa, Congo's capital, to plan a range of potential training programs. Stay tuned!

New Projects Funded
Proceeds from Fran Zone's 2006 World of Good Holiday Auction purchased a motorized dugout canoe for Lotumbe’s doctor, who has regional responsibilities. He coordinates his travel with market days in neighboring villages and thus simultaneously expand trade possibilities for Lotumbe.

With the rest of our auction proceeds and support from other generous donors, HandUp Congo is funding additional health care projects as well as education support, including books for the school library and additional training for the teachers.

We purchased a laptop computer, which will greatly aid the doctor, teachers, and our FLO partners, all of whom  share the computer. They can’t access the Internet in Lotumbe, but their record-keeping burdens are greatly lessened. Another donated NEW laptop would be a wonderful gift!

Sanyo Oceania Pty Ltd donated a state-of-the-art digital movie camera, which FLO can use to document its projects and keep its partners in the loop.

LATE 2006
Fondation Lucie Otaenga
received official status as a non-governmental organization in Congo.

General Store Opened!
A hugely successful general store allows the local population to buy necessities that would otherwise entail a week of paddling in each direction to the nearest large town.

Sewing School Expanded!
A US Embassy grant we wrote in April 2006 has resulted in the rehabilitation of a larger space for the sewing school -- and has purchased more machines and supplies. Aid for Africa Down Under in Australia transported donated sewing supplies and medical goods for Lotumbe; these arrived in late 2006.

Media Awareness & Fundraising Successes
Fall 2006 saw lots of media attention for HandUp Congo thanks to San Francisco's KGO-TV and the amazing Fran Zone and her Holiday World of Good Auction benefiting HandUp Congo. More...

On the Equator:
HandUp Congo founders Anne Zolnor, Lucy Hobgood-Brown & Betsy Brill on their 16-hour journey to Lotumbe in a motorized dugout canoe. The more typical mode of transport -- paddling the canoe -- takes seven days!

Villagers along the way turn out to sing the travelers to shore... an unforgettable welcome.

The Experimental Community Garden is just one of the projects village women have undertaken following HandUp Congo's original gift of two sewing machines. HandUp founders learned a thing or two about women's work from Lotumbe's women at 6 a.m. in the garden.
