The founders of HandUp Congo, Inc., understand that the poor in developing countries often simply lack tools to better their lives and their communities.
Current focus: Lotumbe village, a remote regional medical hub in Equatorial Province, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Université Protestante au Congo (UPC) in Kinshasa
Health Initiative In 2005 and 2006, HandUp Congo delivered eyeglasses, pharmaceutical and medical supplies to the deteriorated local hospital.
Education Initiative In April 2006, Anne, Lucy and Betsy in collaboration with Aid for Africa Down Under delivered a shipment of books and educational supplies.
Health & Income-Generation Fran Zone of Zone Communication has transformed her 2006 and 2007 holiday salons into fundraising events for HandUp Congo with a silent auction. Generous gift donors and bids from Fran’s generous clients allowed HandUp Congo to send money to its partner Fondation Lucie Otaenga for a motorized dugout canoe. The canoe is heavily used for medical outreach and for transporting goods for the community store, as well. FLO has asked for a second motorized canoe for additional medical outreach and for transport of goods to riverside markets.
Higher Education — Health In 2007, Medical Students' Aid Project in Australia collected current medical textbooks for Université Protestante au Congo’s new medical school. Mr. Clément Mamba accepts the shipment in Kinshasa. As a regional health hub, Lotumbe will eventually benefit from the university's requirements that scholarship-supported doctors serve in remote hospitals and clinics.
Micro-enterprise Initiative
In collaboration with CNEC Partners International we sent FLO president Chantal Bolingo to Kinshasa for micro-enterpise training with HOPE International in 2007. She is already implementing her new skills in managing a community loan fund. The picture shows Chantal with an illiterate villager signing for a loan with her thumbprint.
Internships in Goma
Dr. Bolingo (left), Celestin Engelemba - an agricultural specialist - and Antoinette Mapele Bolembo - FLO's vice president - debriefing HandUp Congo representatives on their October 2007 fact-finding study tour to HEAL Africa's capacity building projects in Goma. This study tour was made possible with the support of CNEC Partners International.
